Yanni's used to be better. The gyros used to have a lot more meat. Their food now seems more fast food-like than fresh. Definitely not comparable to Greek Souvlaki downtown which I gave 5 stars.

Typical local Greek/American fast food place. I would equate it with Greek Souvlaki and visit them interchangeably. I usually stick to the Greek offerings, which have always been satisfactory!

Yannis Greek Express serves up good quality Greek food along with American standards like hamburgers and french fries. While Yannis may not be the best around, their food is usually good and service is prompt. We went here for dinner last night and I ordered the chicken soluvaki dinner with a green salad and lemon rice. The chicken soluvaki was lightly seasoned and tasted pretty good, but the chicken was pretty tough and not very tender. The salad tasted good but it was little more than lettuce with a slice of tomato and cucumber on the top. The lemon rice was good. My Dad ordered a yero and said it was good. I'm rating Yannis three stars because I've eaten there before and the food had been better during those visits.

There are those who seem to love Yanni's and those who really don't care for it. Me? Well I guess I bounce back and forth between the two depending on the phase of the moon. Yeah its a scientific thing, honestly. The main upsides are the speed of service and great prices. The gyro dinner at $6.45 gives you a dressed green salad, generous side of rice/fries and a gyro with your choice of sauce. A bargain. The downsides are the quirkiness of the food and the consistency in my opinion. What do I mean by quirkiness. Well, the gyro is on the smaller side compared to most places, but is also Yannis own odd little creation. Rather than long ribbon like strands of meat, the gyro meat is more compacted and rectangular. Its hard to explain, but it differs to most others. The fries too are often on the soggy side, as opposed to crunchy, but hey I know plenty of people who are more than fond of that in their fry. Consistency is an issue too. Fries can be great, or undercook and hard. Souvlaki can be spot on, or bone dry. Salads can be an underwhelming affair, and other times nice and fresh. I keep going back to Yannis time and time again. It always provides a quick affordable meal, and more often than not the quality is there for the price charged.

The chicken gyros was okay, but their service lacks. I was greeted at the window with a firm "yes".

Great gyros, burgers, fries and shakes.

I always hit this place when I'm in Salt Lake. I've been going there for over 20 years when it was a beat up rundown dive. The food hasn't changed at all. The Lemon Rice is my favorite as well as beef teki with either white or red sauce. I've never eaten any of the american Items on the menu but I've tried everything else over the years and have never been disappointed. I'll give you a 5th star if you open on Sundays.

I have been a regular of Yanni's for over 20 years. This is the best Greek you can get. Great service, great quality, and you get your money's worth. The dolmathes are me absolute favorite.

Yanni's is not to be deterred. The gyros here are some of the best in Salt Lake. Tonight, I grabbed one to go and it is the ever-reminder that Greek food is the least likely gem of the Beehive state. There are other great Greek spots, sure. Yanni's however is in close locale to many neighborhoods whether you're in South Salt Lake, Millcreek, or Sugar House. Admittedly, I don't eat here very often, however I know what to get and what to expect: Fresh food, friendly people, and easy going service. It's good food and a place you can't renounce around here. Well done.

This place is amazing and I go here about twice a week. Everyone is nice and friendly. Best Greek food in salt lake!! Don't even get me started on the fried dough balls!!

I think the gyros are pretty nasty, but the burgers are decent. The chicken salad is the best thing they have and quite good. I come back because its convenient.

Four Fing GREAT! Great place for gyros & such. Fantastic fries! Fresh & delicious EVERY time. Nice people, chill atmosphere, reasonable price. Lunch, dinner, whenever.... I leave happy every time.

If you want Greek food from a Guy named Yanni that is regularly at the restaurant monitering everything to ensure quality, this is it. I enjoyed the food and will likely go again at some point.

Good stuff. Been going here for years and still after so long you see a lot of similar faces. The wife will typically get a gyro and fried mushrooms which she loves. She says this location is much better and has a great home style cooking vs the other locations which feel more commercialized. Drive-Thru can be a little annoying with how long the food can take to make. It's not McDonald's fast, but the food is worth it. If you do drive-thru then be prepared to pull forward and park ahead of the window so others can also pay.

These guys make the best gyros and greek salad in town! Yanni's lemon rice is fabulous. We are fortunate they are with walking distance of our house. We have been going there for 20 years. The food is fresh, fast (but made to order) and reasonably priced and Yanni's restaurant is clean.

Luv Yannis.. Been coming here for years. Since way back when it was a little white run down looking place.. And because they were always busy.. U knew it had to be good.. they completely remodeled ground up a while ago... Still same great food. It's the only place i go fir souviulki.. Yummmm.. it is definetely worth trying..

Amazing gyros. Lightly crisped pita and delicious gyro meat. Yum! Delicious tzaziki as well. And I love that they have a drive-thru, which is pretty fast.

Ordered a pastrami burger combo via drive-thru. I liked that the meal came in good time, with everything present and accounted for. It was delicious. It was fresh and hot. It was everything it should be. I enjoyed it to the last bite. Yay! I'm a fan.

This place has been around a long, long time, long enough that I've driven by it for a couple decades at least, not stopping once until today (it's only fairly recently that I've really started to give Greek joints the chance they deserve). My wife has me beat, by virtue of being from here and has always meant to get there, starting from she was a kid, but has yet to make it (I got takeout for this review). This is another place where I think the fries were the best thing (regular readers of my reviews will know what this means) and they indeed were up there with the best that Crown, Apollo, Astro, et. al. have to offer. Their rice was also good, approaching Chicken Express level. The pita was definitely not and the closest comparison to the chicken souvlaki, Greek Market, is leagues and worlds better. I also had fried mushrooms and those were interesting, much drier (hardly greasy at all) and with sort of a corn meal-based batter. They elected, however, to give me fry sauce to dip them in and I consider fry sauce a sort of bane, so I had to sub in bleu cheese dressing when I got home. It wasn't ranch, like everywhere else and this was a decided lack. I had the Pastrami Burger and while the cut of the pastrami was somewhat interesting and different, the bottom half of the bun was completely stale and I had to toss it. The meat, both burger and pastrami, was pretty bland and though the pickles were pretty decent, the overall picture was decidedly average. In comparison to those other local chains I mentioned, this falls way, way short. The parking is very odd and this place can be challenging to get into. I wouldn't say it is a place I should have kept on driving by, per se, but it is nothing like Navajo Hogan, for instance, where stopping was rewarding on the level of having a new regular spot slinging up deliciously awesome food. Service here was very friendly (bumps this up from 2.5 stars) and speed was reasonable for what I ordered. I may stop at this place again (my son really likes the exterior color scheme) and see if I can find something much better, but after viewing the various rewards for "Best Of", dating all the way to 16 years ago (the most recent is 12 years old - seriously, take those down), it seems that this place is definitely out of its prime and the current rating is probably the best I can expect.

Best Gyro in the Salt Lake Valley. You have to get fries because their fry sauce is the best I have ever EVER tasted. And please believe me when I say I love fry sauce and have had it from many places. So a Gryo with extra taziki sauce and tomatoes with a side of fries with fry sauce....I want it now.

The Dolmathes are so good here, excellent in fact, but I just found out tonight that they microwave them before serving. If I wanted to eat from a microwave I would eat at home. For me, there is no place for a microwave in a restaurant.

Yanni's is a staple in Salt Lake City. You won't find better lemon rice (put some red sauce on it for a real treat) or Gyros in town. Yanni is there every day, overseeing the quality and the consistency of the food. The recipes are his own and he is very particular about the quality of the meats, vegetables and fresh desserts he serves. As for the review about the "microwaved dolmathes," one must hope that homemade deliciousness like this doesn't sit in a pot, steaming all day and turning to mush. They have to be prepared and cooled, the micro is the most efficient way to heat them and have them retain their proper texture and taste... It's a heating method, not a cooking method. In addition to great Greek, Yanni makes a great burger and the onion rings are made fresh daily. The fry sauce is some of the best around.

Clean and reasonable. Can't say I'm in a hurry to return since I can get a much better gyro at Greek Soulvaki. One thing I cannot stand is when the gyro meat is sliced too thick ... which is what I got here. The pita was good but also too thick. I was trying really hard to like Yannis and went back and ordered the spinach pie, Dolmades, and pork Soulvaki. The pie was good ... the Dolmades were very loosely wrapped and literally swimming in water. Go see my picture of Greek Soulvaki and Yanni's and you'll see the difference. Sorry, they should know better. Food did taste good, fries are really good, but cannot give it more than 3 stars.

The first thing that struck me about this place is despite a sort of run down outside, the inside was very clean and modern. The floor was spotless and all the tables looked freshly cleaned and as if they were replaced regularly. From the counter you can see back into the kitchen and I was happy to see if looked cleaner than most other fast food restaurants. When I ordered, the staff were all very chatty and friendly. It's refreshing to get that kind of experience at a fast food joint and I tipped accordingly. As for the pfood, I ordered the chicken souvlaki with rice and an Oreo shake. It didn't take long for them to make it and the food itself was delicious. I think they had be best lemon rice I've ever had. Unfortunately (or fortunatelyl?) I couldn't finish all my food courtesy of the big portions. Next time I'll have to remember to skip dessert.

Ive never eaten inside, but have frequented the drive in for years. Consistently good gyros with white or red sauce. Think of the red sauce as chili without beans. The souvlaki is okay but my personal taste finds it somewhat bland especially when paired with the lemon rice. Maybe it just tastes too healthy. I love the fried mushrooms, zucchini and the dolmates are a great meal or snack. Everything tastes fresh. Beefteki is also a good one to try. If you like gyros, grab both the red and white sauce versions. Each sauce adds a great distinct greek taste. The owner and employees always friendly. The parking situation is strange which prevents me from venturing inside but I've never had a bad experience with the food. Sometimes the amount of meat in the gyros seems to vary from bursting out of the pita to barely enough. Not a huge complaint as the stuff i order isn't exactly considered diet food. Great comfort food for when youre craving some great greek style fast food at very reasonable prices.

I can't say it is a terrible place, but quality of food (as well as service) is inconsistent.

The gyro meat lacked seasoning but the Tzatziki sauce wasn't bad nor was the grated onions, a nice change. Why do fries from greek gyro places always have that same "flavor?" This is no different. I'm not saying it's bad necessarily but it's a unique flavor. They do have some unique desserts that I haven't seen at other similar places. See photos. Both were decent and not too sweet. This place is worth trying or if you're in the area and need a gyro fix but it's not my "I want a gyro" goto place.

When the Grandfather ran this place it ran like a well oiled machine in service and top quality food. We have been coming here for years and it was always the best Greek food around but recently it's really gone down hill. Take out always check consistently getting the wrong thing or short an item. I really hope that something changes I wound hate to see them go understand after all the hard work the Grandfather did and the reputation he built.

Well, there are two parts to this review. Part one. The food was delicious. The lemon rice was lemony and fresh tasting. The gyro was saucy, messy and delicious. Part two. Everything was great until I found a long white hair in my rice. Okay. I can handle that. Ignore. Ignore. It's not a big deal. It happens. But then, my companion found what looked like an armpit hair in her gyro. And then it was all over. It doesn't matter how delicious your food is; if you have hair in it, it loses it's appetizing qualities. So, dinner was cut short and we went for dessert someplace else.

Amazing food. I have been out of the area for a couple of years so I decided to grab some Yannis for dinner. It is so nice to find a place where the food is still as good as the first time you ate there.

I love this little joint! I stop in here all the time and get the chicken gyro with red sauce. Its clean, reasonably priced, and fresh. However they don't take American Express and they take way too long to complete your order

A quickie, because sometimes that's all you have time for. Unless you have been hiding under a rock (with the Geico guys), then you know that Salt Lake City has an abundance of Greek owned and themed restaurants. This week, I visited Yanni's Greek Express. Fast. Greek. And good. I ordered, of course, a gyro (pronounced 'your-oh'), and, as an after thought, threw it in a combo. Fries and a drink. Why not? If we're rushing to build a healthy set of love handles, why hold back? The gyro was fantastic. The meat was moist and stacked into the pita to maximize the space, not a bit of grease on it (ok, maybe a bit, but not much). The Greek-style yogurt was poured over the top and was just the right amount of tang. A tomato, freshly sliced, topped it off. And the pita tasted fresh and warm. I'll be back for another, soon. You should drop by and grab one, too. The only thing average about the meal was the fries. Just smaller than steak fries, but larger than Mickey D's, they were about what one could expect, but not what was hoped for. They fit the bill, though-they were fries.

Decor: Not why I go here. Price: Can't really be beat. Variety: Pretty standard Flavor: I think is best you'll find in Salt Lake. I've tried Greek Souvlaki and all the other contenders in the valley. They're all pretty similar. Aside from the salads, Yannis is pretty damn good. The "lamb" may not be the most authentic but, come on, none of these Greek places use 100% lamb in their dishes. Even Aristos (sorry Chris). You have to go to Cafe Med for that (which I don't care for very much). My favorite is definitely the gyro with white sauce, mixed fries & rice, with that tasty lemonade! My wife always gets the chicken souvlaki dinner with lemon rice and drink. The wife and I have been going here for over 14 years and don't plan on changing that any time we have a craving for "commercial" Greek food in Salt lake. ;-)

YOU MUST TRY THIS PLACE! I don't live in Utah anymore, but this is one place I HAVE to go whenever I visit. Serving sort of half Greek/ half American food, this super clean, unpretentious little restaurant is one of my all time favorites anywhere. I love their super fresh and tasty gyros (mmmm...white sauce!), souvlaki, fries, onion rings, and especially the lemon rice that is doled out in ginormous heaps. The prices are very reasonable for the ridiculously huge portions. YUM! You can tell this place is family run, and I believe that the eldest Yanni lives right next door. Yanni's son or one of the other family members is usually inside the restaurant when I am there, and everyone is very nice and helpful. Yanni's has a drive through, but I have never had any trouble finding parking, although it can get pretty busy around mealtimes. It is open Monday-Saturday 11am to 9:30 pm and is closed Sundays. Try it! You won't be sorry you did!

Greek food is the new middle of the road. There are more mediocre Greek restaurants out there than any other variety in my opinion. I have had so many "decent" gyros and souvlakis that I am honestly amazed when the food is better than so-so. Yanni's, unfortunately, is no better than all the other places. The decor is standard. The service was polite and friendly. The menu is what you would expect. I had a gyro dinner platter. The gyro itself was on the small side. The ingredients were fresh and tasty though. I wish that I had been offered feta cheese with it. Most places don't include feta, but they never offer it either. Why not upsell me? The dinner platter included rice (or fries) and a salad. The rice was decidedly lackluster. It tasted like Rice-a-Roni. I might have missed getting fries, but my friend had them--ugh. They were under-cooked and just not special enough to waste the calories. My salad was a joke. I got old iceberg lettuce in a plastic container with Greek dressing on top (no feta either). Would you believe that McDonalds serves salads that are 100 times better? The salad was embarassing. aren't Greek's known for their salad? Yes they are...FAIL! My friend ordered chicken souvlaki with fries. The chicken was moist and tasty, but the fries, as I mentioned, were under cooked and crappy. I keep saying I'm going to stop eating Greek food in cheap restaurants. It's almost always disappointing! Yanni's did nothing to disprove this notion. I won't be goin back.

Quick little update - last time I went the salad dressing seemed different. I called and was told it was the same as always, but this tastes homemade. In fact, it tasted a lot like the one I make at home.

I've loved this place for as long as I can remember. Seriously, my family's been going here since I was little. I still love it a lot, especially the beefteki, lemon rice, and onion rings. Problem is, my mom never wants to come anymore because she's got it engrained in her mind that Greek Souvlaki is so much better just because it's closer to the gym and they have really good cucumber stuff. Show some loyalty, mum. I dunno why I didn't give it five...Well, they're bathrooms aren't the greatest, but whatever.

  • Kenn S.

I always compare similar restaurants. Yanni's doesn't compare favorably with Greek Souvlaki. Both the Greek salad and the dolmathes are way better at Greek Souvlaki. Decor at Yanni's is tacky.
